On April the 26th our Outdoor Education class got to go on a day trip to Port Fairy. While we were there, we got to enjoy some kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and surfing.
We got to school at the usual time and left at 9am. The drive went pretty quickly as it was only an hour until we were there. We first stopped at Little East Beach, this beach was really well protected, so it was nice and calm for the kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.
We were immediately greeted by Jayden and Michelle who were our instructors for the day. They took us down to the beach and gave us some life jackets, and then gave us a brief safety talk. Shortly after, we jumped in the water with the kayaks and went out to sea.
My favorite part of the day happened when we were kayaking, a small pod of dolphins came right up to us and swam under the kayaks. They also jumped out of the water only 2 meters away from us. It was like something out of a movie, I could not believe it!
The next activity we got to enjoy was surfing. We did this on the East Beach out the front of the surfing club. We couldn’t have asked for better surf, the waves broke perfectly! After another safety chat by Jayden and Michelle we hit the water for the second time, but this time we had wetsuits which was greatly appreciated. We would have been out there for about an hour and a half and I can safely say that everyone had a great time.
Sadly we had to get out of the water so we could get back to school in time, but before we left for home we got to go down the street and get ice cream. Before we knew it, we were back home.
We did all this to help learn about water safety and coastal and marine environments which we are learning about in class.
Thank you to everyone that was involved in making this day happen.
