From the Principal Class

Dear Viewbank College Community,

The term has started well, with many excursions, tours, sporting events and, of course, the annual ANZAC Day assemblies.  This continues to be an important event on our calendar, as we commemorate those who served or are currently serving our country in conflicts and in peace-keeping missions.  We wish to thank our local Member of Parliament,

Anthony Carbines, for his attendance and ongoing support of the College.

Instagram:

Our College Instagram account is a fabulous platform for showcasing all the wonderful and exciting events that happen daily at the College. If you are an Instagram user, search for Viewbankcollege3084 and keep abreast of all that goes on!

Thanks to Kate Doran for her up to the date posts and curating the account!

College Forum:

Last Wednesday evening, we held our first forum post-covid.

It was wonderful to bring together student representatives, staff and parents and carers to discuss a number of pressing topics, including our educational future, our vision and values and College communication.

We will be reporting back to our community and resoundingly, the forum voted to see some changes to our vision statement and our motto.

This will take place with further consultation.

Positive behaviours amongst our community:

This week, we have been focusing on one aspect of our 5P’s (our school-wide approach to positive behaviours).

Punctuality has been the focus - being on time to school and to class, submitting work on time and following instructions properly.

We still have students who struggle with punctuality, and we seek the support of families to ensure their student is at school on time, in class and ready to learn at 9.00am. Lateness to class at any time of the day disrupts the lesson flow and the learning of others.

Mobile phones:

Mobile phonescontinue to be an issue. Recent reporting suggests that smart phones are a major cause of increasing rates of anxiety amongst our young people.

Social media, access to violence, extremist views (ie. Andrew Tate’s misogynistic views on women) and porn are easily and regularly consumed by our young people.

Whilst we wait for our regulators to respond to the increasing societal problems relating to passive consumption of unregulated content through providers such as X, Facebook, Instagram and Google, please consider the impact of your student’s phone use.

As a learning environment, we will continue to work with students on understanding the dangers and equipping them with the skills to question and think critically about the content that they are consuming.

Our Respectful Relationships program, taught through Launch and our Health classes, targets many of these issues, also focusing on consent and violence against women, current, high-profile areas of societal concern.

Upcoming events:

  • Generations in Jazz (this weekend)
  • VCE Theatre Studies performances of ‘Clue’ - Wednesday 8th May and Thursday 9th May
  • Autumn Music Festival - Thursday 16th May
  • Presentation Ball for Year 11 students - Friday 7th June

The Victorian State Schools Spectacular

Congratulations to Kieran H of Year 11 who has again secured a role in this year's Victorian Schools State School's Spectacular core performing company.

Kieran will be in the Orchestra (Tenor Sax).

The Spectacular will be performed on Saturday 14th September at John Cain Arena, followed by a television broadcast in December.

Rehearsals have commenced for this year’s production which will showcase more than 3,000 Victorian government school students in a performance of music, song, dance, skating, circus, puppetry and backstage areas such as audio, lighting, vision and stage management.

Tickets for the event will go on sale mid June.
