Wade Dekker (WS, Class of 2014) was able to represent Sri Lanka in two recent friendlies against Brunei. Unfortunately, both games ended in a 1 nil loss, but he represented himself and his country, well.

Below is an excerpt from Knox Churches Soccer Club Facebook page.

"Wade and his family have been and continue to be a part of our club for years with Wade himself playing junior football here before going on to play in the A league for Melbourne City and in the NPL for various clubs. Congratulations Wade and good luck"

Alumni Appreciation Interview

What years did you attend Waverley Christian College?

I attended WCC from 2016 (Year 7) to 2021 (Year 12).

What or who motivated you at the College? What is your fondest memory of your years as a student?

I had really great teachers in VCE who encouraged me not only in my studies, but in my life in general. I could tell that they genuinely cared about me as a student and that motivated me to do well for them.

One of my fondest memories was shaving Mr Woolnough’s beard when we were in Year 12 – so glad we raised enough money to do it!

What were the biggest challenges you’ve faced since leaving School?

One of the biggest challenges that I’ve faced has just been adjusting to university and balancing work, studies and a social life. I never realised how much the routine of school helped me to stay on track.

What goals did you set yourself when you finished at WCC, and have you stuck to that plan?

I wanted to go to university to study teaching and work in a school environment while studying, which so far I have stuck to – still got 1 ½ years of studying to go.

What drew you to your area of work or study this year, and what do you love about it?

I am currently studying teaching and working at WCC as a Learning Support Assistant in our Supported Program of Applied Readiness for Community (SPARC). I have always loved teaching and I had so many great teachers whilst I was in school who mentored me throughout my years which inspired me to pursue teaching.

What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

Praise God through everything, no matter the circumstances you are going through. There is always something to be grateful for and praising God through the hard times helps shift your perspective off the bad and onto the good. Praising God also helps in leaning more into Him and trusting that He will provide and come through in what you are going through.

What excites you most about the future?

I am really excited to finish university and start working. I’m not sure where I want to work yet but I’m excited to see the path God opens up for me!

What advice do you have for current students?

While study is important, also remember to have fun. School is a really special time where you get to hang out with your friends all day so enjoy it while you are there.

We have an expression of interest form that you can complete on our website. We are particularly interested in alumni who are now teachers who are interested to work with us in the New Year or are available for an interim role or would like to work as a Learning Assistant while studying. We also have career opportunities in IT, finance and administration roles. We invest in our graduates and early career teachers, so if you are a graduate or early career teacher, please let us know.
