In our Garden
Term 2: Garden Glimpses and Thankyou!
Firstly, thanks to all helpers who cared for our chickens and garden over the break. The school garden benefits hugely from the input of volunteers as well as our students and teachers. Big thanks to La Chi Hto, our Karen Volunteer for all the weeding she has done! Sonia (1/2 D) and her family loved helping care for our chickens and doing weeding in the Chook Garden too.
It has been lovely to see the progress we have made in the garden over the last two weeks. Autumn has seen us all busy removing spent summer veggies and flowers, planting seedlings and preparing our garden beds with fresh compost. Here are some glimpses of our students absorbed in their activities.
Tiger Snakes (3/4K) clearing the way by removing weeds and old Cosmos plants,
Grapevines (5/6C) and Sour Strawberries (3/4K) preparing the soil by careful weeding and addition of compost,
Squirmy Worms (5/6C) and Spicy Chillis (3/4 B) planting seedlings,
and Lightening Lizards (1/2D) caring for compost. They were super organised!
Speaking of Compost
It is a great time off year to kick your compost heap into action, especially if you've had a decent amount of rain.
Just layer dried straw or fallen leaves with green leafy weeds, food scraps and a little well-rotted manure or rich garden soil as an activator. You can do this in a corner of your garden in a heap or in a constructed bay (pallets are great for this) or a big green bin (open on the bottom with a lid on top). It's good to remember that compost needs warmth and water, so choose your spot accordingly.
