STEM News

Term 3 in STEM will be an exciting journey where students will become engineers!

Years 3-6 students will be constructing their Smart City Projects where they will develop their teamwork skills as they not only build their cardboard models, but also add innovative automation.

Imagine, lights that are voice activated or adjust automatically to changing daylight, bins that open as you approach, and fans that activate based on temperature changes!

Year 1/2 students will be using Lego to help them develop their understanding of physics. They will explore forces and motion through the construction and modification of amusement park rides, applying their coding skills to program these creations with motors and colour sensors.

Foundation students will be focussing on chemical and physical sciences. They will investigate materials and their properties using tools like microscopes and magnifying glasses. This exploration will deepen their understanding of why different materials are used in everyday objects.

In other exciting STEM news, some students had the opportunity to trial ClassVR headsets. These headsets integrate both virtual reality and augmented reality resources, offering immersive experiences that enrich learning across all subjects. Students explored the deep ocean, observing great white sharks in their natural habitat, and ventured into space for a close encounter with a black hole. They journeyed to Antarctica to waddle with penguins and marvelled at the aurora borealis from a fjord at Qaleraliq Glacier in Greenland. Some also visited a salmon fishery to understand fish farming and processing, while others compared graffiti art in Finland to Melbourne's urban art scene. Students are enthusiastic about the potential of these devices to enhance their learning experiences.
