Restorative Practices

This year, Karoo Primary School commenced the 3rd and final year of our partnership with Real Schools and our continued implementation of restorative practices.  Over this time, we have worked with our Real School facilitator, Shelia Bollard, to build student, staff and community understanding on restorative practices, brain functions, conflict resolution and support strategies.  As part of our partnership, Sheila comes to our school and works with our staff and community on key areas.

On Wednesday the 31st of July, Shelia, was at KPS and spent the day engaging in professional learning with our staff.  Our teachers utilised Shelia's expertise on restorative practices to explore further how to implement strategies to support positive student behavioural choices in each year level.  The day was a fantastic day of learning with many key strategies identified.

PEPS: Real Schools - Raising a Resilient Child

In the evening on Wednesday 31st of July, KPS hosted our next event in our Parent Education Partnership Series (PEPS) which was Raising a Resilient Child.   This event was presented by our Real Schools facilitator, Sheila Bollard, who spoke further on developing our understanding of Resilience and power in relationships.

Shelia spoke about the importance of:

  • Celebrating your 'wins' that you have with your child every day
  • Reflecting on your actions when you interact with your child
  • The difference between bullying and being mean and our responses as adults
  • How to support your children through conflict
  • The importance of having the balance between being Firm and Fair and working with your child in the 'relational' space (See diagram below)
  • How to support your child with language use, conduct and mindset.

The parents that attended the event shared their positive feedback on the learning that they engaged with.  Thank you to all those that were able to attend.  We were fortunate to be able to record the session and will be able to share this with our school community in the coming weeks, so that we can all benefit from the learning.

I hope that you all have a wonderful fortnight, and I look forward to seeing you around our sensational school!

Kind Regards,

Courtney Hoffmann
