From the Classroom
We have been so busy in Grade 5/6 with lots of exciting learning so far in Term 3!
Here are some highlights:
OLYMPICS
In Grade 5/6 this week, we have been incorporating the Olympics into our learning. We have learnt about the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect and made links to our own school values. We’ve explored the History of Olympic events and how they have evolved over time. Each student in 5/6 was assigned an Olympic country this week and we have been researching about our Olympic country’s flag, geography, climate and it’s competing athletes. This included designing some new Olympic uniforms for our assigned country. We are keeping a medal tally for our assigned country and will be incorporating some of the data we collect into our Mathematic learning in coming weeks.
The Grade 5/6 students have also been decorating and nurturing potato athletes who will compete in the Potato Olympics in Week 5. Here are some of our budding potato athletes in their Spudvillage:
EARN AND LEARN
We have also been building our Money and Financial Maths knowledge in our Earn and Learn program. Students applied for jobs late in Term 2 and have been working on getting their businesses set up. We have a Bank, Post Office, Pet Shop, Retail Shops, Licensing and Registration and Real Estate Agents to name a few. We have learnt about salaries and tax, navigating the fundamentals of setting up a business for opening. It has been wonderful to see students’ motivation and problem-solving skills in real life scenarios and some outside the box thinking and entrepreneurship coming through!
CYBERSAFETY INCURSION
The 5/6 students enjoyed the Cybersafety Incursion on Tuesday where members from Victoria Police came and spoke to us about being safe online. The session aligned well with what we learn regularly through our Cybersafety Project lessons and we were able to make links and reflect on the session in relation to our online behaviours.
Science News
In the Grade 1/2 area, students are learning all about weather. Last week, we looked at what causes thunderstorms. We shared our experiences, looked at their impact on the environment (both positive and negative) and followed this by creating our own storm in a cup! We had a blast watching the clouds (shaving cream) fill with water (blue food dye) and then release down as rain. A but messy, but lots of fun!
Art News
In week one of this term we celebrated NAIDOC week across the school. In the Grade 3/4/5/6 area we looked at Indigenous Art forms, and focused on the way they portray stories in their work. With the theme “Keep the Fire Burning” students were asked to plan and design their own painting inspired by Indigenous art. I love the wide range of artworks that students created and how they have all interpreted the inspiration in a different way. Here is a small selection of artworks, and the rest can be seen in the office foyer in our NAIDOC display.
Art Room Request
We will be moving onto paper mâché soon. All donations of old newspaper greatly appreciated! Please send to the art room Tuesday-Friday. Thanks in advance!
