Teaching and Learning
P-2 News from Miss Duffy
This term in Integrated Studies we have been learning about Indigenous Australian Culture. Last week we looked at traditional bush medicines and bush tucker. We were amazed by the healing power of some plants and how much food can be sourced from the Australian bush. We then set about making some lemon myrtle damper and added some sugarbag (honey) and crushed berries (jam) to our creations.
With Term Three drawing to a close, I wanted to take this time to celebrate the amazing efforts and achievements the P-2 students have made this term. They have worked hard to improve their reading, increase their phonics knowledge (including completing spelling homework each night), become math geniuses and learn all about Indigenous Australians as part of our Integrated Studies unit. These little legends deserve a giant pat on the back. I asked each of them what they think their main learning achievements were this term and below are their answers.
Levi: I am very impressed with myself because I get all of my work done and I work hard. I am proud of working with my class to do a tricky jigsaw puzzle.
Elliot: I got spelling words to learn for the first time and in my test I get them right. I also now know all about the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Island and Australian flags.
Stevie: I am proud of my artwork, especially the dinosaur that I made. I am proud of my spelling, I can spell lots of tricky words now.
Laxford: I think I have improved my writing and it is interesting and my handwriting is neat. I have learnt how to read coordinates and find objects on a grid.
Lucian: Making the Yorkyork and turning it from a 2D object into a 3D figure is something I am proud of. I have learnt how to divide larger numbers by a single number and write the remainder as a fraction.
Year 3-6 News from Mr Collins
What better way to consolidate our learning than with a game? After learning all about grids, referencing, cartesian coordinates and all other things location related, the kids and I took part in a friendly battleship competition. Monitoring the kids during the game allowed me to intervene at any points of confusion and also assess each student's understanding.
Art News from Miss Duffy
What a feast for the eyes our students fabric dinosaur creations are. Each student had to design a dinosaur that was cartoon-like (rather than realistic). They then had to trace their design onto some special (and very glittery) fabric which was then ironed onto a calico backing. The glitter fabric was coated so it would adhere to the calico. The students are extremely proud of their designs and we are looking at how to turn these into a keepsake.
MARC News from Mrs Gentry
Last week in our MARC session we read Hope is the Thing by Johanna Bell and Erica Wagner. This beautiful book won the CBCA book of the year for the New Illustrator category. Students considered the concept of hope and thought about what some of their hopes might be. We used the bird theme of the book to inspire our response by decorating a bird that carried our hope. We also replicated the method of illustrating by colouring a piece of paper and then cutting out bird shapes (or other nature inspired shapes).
