Specialist

Our topic in Art this term is 'Art around the world'.
FOUNDATION:
In Foundation last week, we created mendhi hands. We traced our own hands and decorated them using patterns that we looked at from India and Pakistan. The designs are intricate and detailed. They symbolise joy, luck, and blessings, especially during weddings, festivals, and other important events. The reddish-brown colour that henna leaves after application also signifies vitality and the bonds of family and community.
This week we are pairing up with STEM class to begin creating our own papier mache planets.
GRADE 1/2:
In Grade 1 and 2 last week, we looked at Amate bark paintings from Mexico. The students looked at designs from these and started drawing their own designs.
We also have paired up with STEM classes this week to create our own papier mache planets.
GRADE 3/4:
In Grade 3 and 4 last week, we started to create sunset backgrounds using soft pastels and focusing on blending and gradients. Our focus was the Australian outback. This week, students have started to use black oil pastel to create Australian animals and trees, to look like shadows against the sunset.
GRADE 5/6:
In Grade 5 and 6 last week, students started to create their own rangioli/mandala design. Rangoli is used in India and consists of bright and colourful intricate designs, and usually serve a symbolic purpose. Rangoli can have other meanings, too, including bringing good fortune.
This week we paired up with STEM and made playdough.
In STEM, students will explore the fascinating world of Earth and Space Science.
Foundation - Grade 1/2
Students have been exploring our solar system, learning about the difference between a planet, dwarf planet, moon and star. They began their paper mache projects, making their own planet. We have created the shape, next week, we will be painting!
Grade 3/4
Our Grade 3/4 students learnt about the different moon phases and the effect our natural satellite has on our planet. They used the cream in Oreos to demonstrate their understanding of the different phases in relation to the sun and the angle the moon is towards Earth.
Grade 5/6
Students have begun learning about Project Artemis and the Australian Space Agency's contribution to getting humans to Mars via the moon. They completed a critical thinking challenge to show their understanding of what humanity will need to survive in the hostile environment of Mars.
Exciting photos of finished projects to come next issue!
