Reading

In reading, the grade 3/4's have continued to build an understanding of the predicting comprehension strategy. We have explored how readers use clues or evidence in the text and their prior knowledge to help them make predictions about what might happen next in the story. We have also explored how readers can make predictions using their knowledge of an author's style. It was fun analysing and comparing books by Aaron Blabey, Dr Suess and Roger Hargreaves.

In reading, we have also started to explore the structure, features and purpose of an explanation text. We will continue to build our knowledge on this text type over the coming weeks.

Writing

In writing, the grade 3/4's have continued to develop their understanding and skills with procedural texts. A highlight of this fortnight was when Mrs Hassanein came and visited us in our learning space! She demonstrated how to make a delicious Bird's Nest sweet. It was great learning about the ingredients and process involved in making this treat! Following this special experience, the students drafted and published their procedural text titled 'How to Make a Bird's Nest'.

Maths

In maths, the grade 3/4s have been exploring the concept of multiplication. We have practised skip counting patterns and created 'cheat sheets' for our books. Being familiar with these skip counting patterns will help students solve multiplication and division problems. We have also been representing multiplication problems as equal groups and arrays.

One of our favourite things in maths has been playing the '3 in a Row' multiplication game. It has given us an opportunity to practise our skip counting patterns and times tables!

Inquiry

In Inquiry, we have continued to learn about The Olympics. It has been so much fun learning about different sporting events and the countries that are competing. It has been very inspiring watching the amazing skills of the athletes. This topic also connected to our procedural writing focus as students drafted a text titled: '5 Steps to Be An Amazing Athlete.' We have concluded our learning about The Olympics with a Grade 3/4 Mini Olympics and gold medal cookie decorating!

SEL

In SEL, we have been learning about belly breathing. This a great strategy to help us self-regulate and refocus. It would be wonderful if you could practise this strategy at home, too!
