Principal
Welcome Back to Term 3
It is often said that nothing much happens in Term 3. That is certainly not the case with Solway! The weather may be cold, wet and dreary, however we are keeping warm with our Potato Olympic events, Hooptime training, running club and practising our dance skills. The rumour is Mr Duncan has some moves that need to be seen to be believed! We have an action-packed term ahead of us. Please see the diary dates to ensure you up to date with all we have planned.
Students leaving Solway
We are seeking information from any family with students who will NOT be returning to Solway in 2025. This does not include our Year 6 graduating students. You may be re-locating to another suburb or state or perhaps your child is moving to an independent school. If this applies to you we ask that you send an email to Kateya.nancarrow@education.vic.gov.au to indicate this information. Your assistance with this is greatly appreciated as we are preparing to commence our budget planning for 2025 and accurate enrolments are critical to this process.
Multi-Cultural News
The Multi-Cultural team are busy preparing for our Cultural Day, which I can confirm will be held on Tuesday 10 September. The team are busy coordinating activities with our class and specialist teachers to ensure we have a variety of activities for students to participate in. Students will be invited to come along to school in traditional dress and will have the option to purchase a bento box lunch. More information will be provided closer to the date.
DISCO
Disco tickets are now on sale for our Disco on Thursday 8 August. Our SRC disco is always a popular event so get in and get your tickets now!
Sorry parents, this is a Solway kids only event, you’ll have to find somewhere else to wear your dancing shoes!!

Sport
The State Cross Country Competition was held on Thursday 18 July. Solway had 3 students compete. Congratulations to Indi in Year 6 and Jensen and Jaxon in Year 5. By all accounts it was a challenging course, through a lot of mud! Jaxon finished in 5th place and this has earned him a position in the School Sport Victoria (SSV) Team Vic Cross Country. This team will compete in the National School Sport Australia Championships to be held at Yarra Glen, Victoria in August. An outstanding achievement Jaxon!
At present we have many of our teams busy with competition. Last week, our AFL team won the Division competition, and they are heading off to compete at Regionals. Our Tball team also competed in the Division Finals. This week, our Junior and Senior Hoop time teams have their competition days, and our girls are participating in a football day, run by the AFL. Good luck to all our athletes.
Student Achievement
Congratulations to Logan who won the Chess award for Term 2.
Dates are being set for ICAS assessments. If your child is taking part in ICAS, please look out for a Compass notification indicating the time and date and avoid making appointments at these times.
Helping to make school crossings safer for everyone.
We have had many reports of unsafe practices around our roads and crossings. School Crossing Supervisors play a vitally important role in ensuring the safety of children and our wider community at our school crossings. We ask that you read over the instructions below and have a conversation with your child/ren regarding the use of our crossings.
- One blast of the supervisor’s whistle means stopping immediately.
- Two blasts of a whistle mean it is safe to cross.
- Students should not stand too close to the road while waiting to be instructed to cross by the supervisor.
- Students should keep together and walk quickly and directly to the opposite footpath.
Respect the road rules and parking signs
Illegal parking in a school zone is not only inconsiderate to other motorists, it threatens the safety of students. Council parking officers will be onsite, and fines will be issued for breaking any of the following traffic rules.
- Double-parking restricts the view of other drivers, obstructs traffic flow, and means children have to get out of the car onto the road. It also blocks the passage of any emergency vehicles that might need to pass.
- School crossings are there to ensure children cross the road safely. Parking within 20 metres before or 10 metres after a designated school crossing is illegal.
- The designated Kiss and Ride areas outside schools are No Parking, with a maximum two-minute standing time. This gives parents enough time to kiss and drop off/collect their children before moving on to allow the next car to follow suit.
- School zone speed limits are clearly signposted and must be adhered to.
Congratulations
It appears that January will be a busy time for two of our staff members. It is with big smiles we announce some happy news! Congratulations to Ms Sam Lim who is expecting her second child and to Matt from TeamKids who is expecting his first.
