Our Excursion to the NGV
On Monday, 22nd July, the Years 3 and 4 students embarked on an exciting excursion to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). This visit was centred around portraiture, offering students a unique opportunity to explore various forms of portraits across different cultures and time periods.
One of the highlights of the day was the viewing of Pablo Picasso's iconic painting, The Weeping Woman. This powerful piece, known for its vivid colors and emotional intensity, captivated the students' imaginations. They learned about Picasso's distinct style, characterized by bold shapes and abstract forms. The students enjoyed having a go at drawing their own versions of this piece.
Another highlight was from the 15th-17th Century gallery where the students learned about the riveting story of Cleopatra and Mark Antony. The pair engaged in competition over who could hold the most lavish banquet. Ultimately, Cleopatra won, by placing her expensive pearl earring into a glass of vinegar and drinking it, thereby creating the most expensive drink in the world!
The excursion to the National Gallery of Victoria was a wonderful experience that enriched the students' understanding of art and culture. They left with a deeper appreciation for the diversity of artistic expression and the power of portraiture to capture the essence of individuals across different times and cultures. We were so inspired that the students have already begun amazing Picasso style portraits for the upcoming Art Show!
