Level  6

Writing

Students in Level 6 have been learning about narratives and how to construct them. Concepts of characterisation, setting the scene and problem, how to bump up our writing and choosing powerful, yet concise language, have all been the focus. This week, students have started to apply this knowledge and implement it in their own narratives. Students have been exploring how to create their own texts and setting the scene, how to use their own characters and engage the reader through their character’s personality, traits, flaws and actions. Exploring and connecting their character’s relationship to the problems, balancing the progression of the story carefully and maintaining the reader’s engagement will round off our work this week.

Maths

Students have been exploring fractions, decimals and percentages and the relationship between the three. For the past few weeks, students have learnt about comparing fractions, equivalents, representations of their understanding and justification. Multiplying fractions, dividing fractions, ratios and notation have also been the focus. Within each lesson is explicit teaching of content and the opportunity to explore and apply thinking. Students have also created their own flags based upon certain fractions and have designed their own fraction gardens/outdoor spaces.

Inquiry

This term, students have been learning about Geography. They have explored Australia and the components that make up our country. Students have learnt about the different states and territories, as well as studied Dreamtime stories and the powerful messages they contain. The Olympics became a focus for our students, and they have looked at the impact that these events have for countries, economies and the globe. Students also explored the sports and events that have taken place, with students creating infographics and slideshows about these significant events.
