Teaching And Learning

Numeracy
Over the last fortnight, students across all year levels have been learning about whole numbers and place value, while building confidence in using correct mathematical language. Our Year 5/6 students have also been exploring decimal place value.
A great game to play at home is ‘Double Hat-trick’. It helps students make, order and compare numbers using their place value knowledge. All you need is a piece of paper, a pen and 2 dice or a deck of cards.
Here are some great questions you can ask as you are playing.
“What numbers can you make?”
“Why did you decide to make __ instead of __?”
“How do you know that goes there?”
“What are you hoping to roll? Why?” (This is especially good to use if you get students to roll the dice one at a time)
“What would you do differently next time you play?”
Literacy
Our Foundation students have made a fantastic start to the year! It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they begin their literacy journey.
Students have been busy learning new letters and sounds, building their understanding of how letters represent the sounds we hear in words. They have also been exploring their classroom libraries, developing positive reading habits and learning how to care for and enjoy books.
A big focus has been practising correct letter formation, with students taking great care and pride in their handwriting. During our Sounds-Write sessions, they have been especially excited to segment and blend sounds to create CVC (consonant–vowel–consonant) words. The smiles when they realise that they can read and write words independently have been priceless!
We are so proud of the confident and capable start our Foundation students have made to their literacy learning. We look forward to sharing more of their progress throughout the term.
