The Science Talent Search is a highly successful state-wide science competition. It is based around Victorian Curriculum principles, encouraging students to pursue creative, open-ended projects and hone their science inquiry skills. In 2025, RGLPS had 20 students participate, with 11 of these students being recipients of a bursary award. We invite all students from Grade 1 to 6 to participate in the Science Talent Search if they are interested. There will be an information session for students who are interested in participating in this year's Science Talent Search on Thursday 5 March in the STEM room at 2pm (second break). Prep - In Term One, students are focusing on biological sciences - the study of living things. Over the last two weeks, they have learned about the difference between needs and wants. Needs are things that we must have and wants are things that we would like to have (but do not need). Students completed an activity to identify what the need to bring to school each day. They also completed an activity about what humans need to survive - this activity has been loaded onto their Seesaw journal for you to see.

Year 1/2s - In Term One, students are focusing on Earth and space sciences. Over the last two weeks, they have learned about orbits - all 8 planets orbit around the sun on different paths. Students completed an investigation about orbits to identify that planets closest to the sun have a shorter orbit and planets further away from the sun have a longer orbit. An activity about planets has been loaded onto your child's Seesaw journal for you to see what they have been learning.

Year 3/4s - In Term One, students are focusing on Earth and space sciences. They are focusing on how water is important to Earth. Over the last two weeks, students have learned about the water cycle. They have identified and explained the 4 key stages in the water cycle - evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection and storage. Students have also identified and explained 4 additional stages in the water cycle - infiltration, runoff, transpiration and crystallisation. Their work on freshwater has been loaded onto their Seesaw journal for you to see.

Year 5/6s - In Term One, students are focusing on Earth and space sciences. They are focusing on how Earth fits and interacts with our Solar System. Over the last two weeks, students have learned about the 5 key movements involving the sun, Earth and moon. The sun rotates, the Earth rotates and orbits the sun, and the moon rotates and orbits Earth. They have used their understanding of these movements to explain how Earth experiences night and day and why daytime starts and ends at different times for different places on Earth. An activity has been loaded onto your child's Seesaw journal for you to see what they have been learning.
