ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING - MESC

Assessment and Reporting at MESC
Assessment:
At MESC, assessment and reporting is a continual process. Most lessons, students are being provided with feedback on formative assessment tasks, which students can use to identify areas of strength and areas that they can work on. Each lesson staff are also using different strategies to check for student understanding to ensure that students are progressing in their development of knowledge and skills.
At the end of each unit or outcome, students will complete a summative assessment task, in the form of a CAT (Common Assessment task) or SAC (School-Assessed Coursework). For students in years 7-10, this will be measured against Victorian Curriculum 2.0 outcomes, with teachers making an on-balance judgement on the students progress across the unit. For years 11-12, students will be assessed against performance descriptors based on the VCAA rubric, indicating the level of performance on the SAC. Teachers will provide specific feedback on this task for students and will also record details of each student’s performance via a compass learning task.
Families are strongly encouraged to regularly check compass learning tasks, as staff will update these across the semester and provide feedback as to each student’s progress.
Students in years 10 and 11 will be sitting MESC exams in both semesters 1 and 2, with students in year 12 sitting MESC exams in semester 2. These exams are for VCE subjects only – VCE VM subjects do not run MESC exams. MESC exams will be reported on in end of semester reports.
If you have any questions about your student’s progress at any time, please get in touch with the relevant classroom teacher.
Reporting:
Students will receive progress reports every 5 weeks, 3 times across a semester. These reports are where teachers provide feedback as to student’s progress in their learning behaviours, as well as their learning progress. At the end of each semester, students will receive an end of semester report, with a summary of their progress across the semester. All reports can be accessed via compass.
Student-Led conferences:
These occur once each semester and are an opportunity for students to share what they are learning and how they are progressing, in collaboration with teachers and families. This is another valuable opportunity for students to reflect on their progress and consider areas of strength and areas that they can work on to continue to show academic and personal growth.
