Literacy

Over the past few weeks, the preps have been learning to recognise and read the sounds and letters s, t, a, p, n, and i. They have been practising saying each sound, matching sounds to letters, and blending them together to read simple words such as nit, pip, sap, tip, Nat, pit, tan, and sip. It has been wonderful to see students building confidence as they begin to blend sounds together and read words independently. They are looking forward to finally getting some new sounds to add to their collection next week!

The grade 1/2's learnt to recognise and read the ‘ai’ sound. They have been practising blending this sound with other letters to read and spell words such as aim, rain, wait, snail, trail, nail, afraid, railway, explain, and paintbrush. Students were also introduced to the split digraph ‘a_e’, where the ‘e’ at the end of the word helps the ‘a’ say its name. Using this pattern, students practised reading and spelling words including name, save, shade, snake, and grade.

Maths

In Maths, students have been developing their understanding of numbers to 20. They have practised different counting sequences and learned to connect the number name and numeral to the correct quantity in a collection. They also explored how numbers can be represented as “ten and some more”, helping them build a stronger understanding of place value. For example, recognising that numbers such as 14 are made up of one ten and four more. In addition, students have been building on their understanding of subitising, which involves quickly recognising the number of items in a small collection without counting each one individually.
