Building Consistency @ CPS with CM
Amanda Miller, Assistant Principal
During our Curriculum Day at the beginning of Term 1, all staff engaged in a full day of professional learning with an introduction to Classroom Mastery (CM).
Classroom Mastery is a whole-school program that we believe will help us set strong foundations for the year and support us in developing clear behavioural routines, a positive classroom culture, and consistency across the school.
Throughout the day, staff learned how Classroom Mastery can strengthen our practice and, most importantly, improve learning conditions for our students. Together, we developed consistent entry and exit routines, along with clear cues for attention. Staff modelled and practised these routines to ensure they could be implemented with clarity and consistency. This preparation meant that when students arrived ready to learn the new routines on day one, we were ready to explicitly teach and reinforce them.
We are now four weeks into our Classroom Mastery journey and are already seeing the benefits. There is greater consistency across the school, and students clearly understand what is expected of them. Classrooms are calm, transitions are smoother, and learning time is maximised.
Importantly, this has not been a one-off professional learning session. The ongoing support from the Classroom Mastery team ensures we continue embedding these strategies into daily practice and creating sustainable, long-term change.
Here is an insight into what some of our students are saying:
“When the teacher says ‘3…2…1’, we all say ‘Ready!’ to let the teacher know we are ready for the next instruction.”
“‘Voices off’ means we are all silent, which I think is respectful for my teacher.”
“When the music plays in the morning, I go to my classroom door with my bag and we line up in two lines in roll order.”
“If we stand behind our tables before recess, our teacher can see that we all have our hats ready to go out and play.”
“My teacher knows I am listening when I have my eyes on them.”
“Rule #1 is ‘follow the teacher’s instructions’, which also helps me be safe.”
“If I have empty hands, I put everything down on the table and stop drawing.”
Here is an insight into what some of our teachers are saying:
“The Preps have been amazing. Their start to the school year has been outstanding.”
“The call to attention saves time — the student response is … like …. instant!”
“Our students as an audience at our first whole-school assembly was a very proud moment.”
“Whether students line up for PE, Science or go to the library, the expectation is the same — and they know it.”
We are extremely proud of the way our students have embraced these routines and the positive learning environment we are building together.
Stay tuned for our next update on how CM continues to build consistency at CPS.
In the meantime… try saying “3, 2, 1” in your household and see what happens!
