Year 5
Spotlight on Learning
Bethany Community
Dear Bethany Families,
Students have been settling well into new learning spaces this term, becoming familiar with classroom routines and expectations. They are demonstrating the St Thomas Way by showing respect, responsibility, and care for others, and are practising being upstanders by supporting their peers and taking positive action when they see someone in need. This focus helps build a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment for everyone.
Our learning this week:
Religious Education:
In Religious Education, students are learning to show their knowledge of Lent. They are exploring the meaning and significance of this season and how it helps people reflect, pray, and grow in their faith. Students are demonstrating their understanding by creating mind maps that show what they know about Lent, including key practices, symbols, and values. This learning helps students connect their knowledge of Catholic traditions to their own lives and develop a deeper understanding of faith in action.
English
In English, students are exploring Latin base words ‘mobe-mote-move’ to strengthen their spelling, vocabulary, and word knowledge. They are practising using these words correctly in sentences and applying them in their writing. Students are also learning to plan and write narratives, focusing on developing clear paragraphs, rich vocabulary, and varied sentence structures. This learning aligns with the Victorian Curriculum, helping students to enhance their reading, spelling, and writing skills while creating engaging and well-structured texts.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students are learning to identify multiples of numbers using the distributive property. They are practising how to break numbers into parts and combine them to form multiples, helping to develop their understanding of multiplication strategies. This learning supports students in building confidence with numbers and strengthens their problem-solving skills.
Integrated Studies
In Integrated Studies, students are learning to compare different places using geographical language. They are identifying natural and human features of places and exploring how these features influence how people live. Students will compare similarities and differences between places and use evidence from images, maps, and data to support their understanding. This learning helps students develop geographical thinking skills and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
Social Emotional Learning:
In Social Emotional Learning, students are developing an understanding of what bullying is and what it is not. They are learning about the role of an upstander—someone who takes positive action to support others—and exploring strategies they can use to act as upstanders in everyday situations. Students are practising describing bullying, explaining what it means to be an upstander, and discussing how they would use these strategies to respond to potential challenges. This learning helps students build empathy, confidence, and the skills to create a safe and respectful school community.
