LAMB JUDGING INCURSION PROVIDES GCS STUDENTS WITH HANDS-ON AGRICULTURAL EXPERIENCE
On Monday, 16th February, students at Guyra Central School were thrilled to welcome Angus Dawson from Arakoon Performance Genetics to the school farm for a special lamb judging incursion. This exciting visit gave students a valuable opportunity to develop their practical skills in sheep assessment and livestock management, vital areas of knowledge for those interested in agriculture.
Throughout the day, Angus guided students through the process of mouthing sheep to accurately estimate their age—a key technique in animal husbandry. Students also learnt how to evaluate ewes for reproductive and structural soundness, gaining insights into the traits that contribute to a healthy and productive flock.
The highlight of the incursion was the hands-on task of weighing and drafting a pen of lambs. Under Angus’s expert supervision, students carefully selected their Pen of 3 entry for the Prime Lamb Hoof and Hook competition at the 2026 Guyra Show. This experience not only reinforced the students’ practical skills but also fostered teamwork and decision-making as they worked collaboratively to make informed choices about their entries.
We are proud of our students’ efforts and achievements at the Guyra Show and grateful to Angus Dawson for generously sharing his time and expertise. His visit supported the school’s commitment to providing authentic agricultural learning experiences that prepare students for future opportunities in the industry.

Year 7 Camp at Lake Ainsworth
Early on the 19th of March, 19 sleepy Year 7 students arrived at school, their bags packed and parents close by their sides. A buzz of excitement and anticipation filled the air as we waited for everyone to arrive and load their bags into the trailer before setting off on our four-hour journey to the Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreational Facility.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by our camp leader, Dan, who cracked jokes, explained the rules, and led us to our cabins where students would bunk with their friends for the entire camp.
Our first activity was ‘Navy Seals’ on the beach. Students linked arms and ventured into the ocean, completing squats, sit-ups, and running along the sand. This energetic start perfectly set the tone for the team-building activities scheduled over the next few days. After ‘Navy Seals’, students enjoyed their first (of many) delicious meals in the dining hall.
Following dinner and after making their beds, the students headed to the pool for the next activity—raft building. They selected from a variety of materials including rope, milk cartons, noodles, bread crates, and other floating objects. Together, each group worked to construct a raft capable of carrying every member safely across the pool. After this challenge, the students were exhausted and settled down with some biscuits before preparing for bed.
The next morning, although still looking a little sleepy after an exciting night, there was no time to rest. After breakfast, the students went straight to the lake for a full day of sailing and stand-up paddleboarding. They had a blast learning to manoeuvre the boats around the water and buoys. Stand-up paddleboarding was a crowd favourite, especially since the students found great fun in flipping their teachers off their boards!
After a big day on the water, students enjoyed a hearty dinner of curry, rice, and bread. Then, following an hour of downtime to call home, we put on our shoes and headed back for some indoor rock climbing. Though some were hesitant at first, every student donned a harness and gave it their best go! The instructors were so impressed with our students’ attitudes and resilience that we even broke some climbing records!
Before we knew it, it was time to return to camp for our final night at Lake Ainsworth. Students slept much better on the second night and woke up full of energy, ready to take on their peers in a game of Archery Tag! This activity was a fantastic way to practice aim and accuracy, and it gave the teachers a chance to let off some steam, too. After an hour of archery, it was time to say goodbye to Dan and board the bus home.
We stopped in Grafton for lunch before heading back up the mountain, where our parents and loved ones welcomed us with open arms—ready for a restful weekend in their own beds!
Everyone had a fantastic time at camp, returning to school with high spirits and valuable team-building skills that will stay with us. The students gained greater confidence to tackle challenges both in and out of the classroom and built stronger bonds with their teachers and peers.
Thank you to all the teachers, parents, and students who helped raise funds to reduce the cost of camp and ensured our students were prepared and ready to go.
We’ll see you next year, Lake Ainsworth!

This hands-on opportunity allowed students to showcase and enhance their practical skills in a real-world setting, further preparing them for future careers in hospitality.
Throughout the day, students prepared a classic fish and chips with homemade tartare sauce, followed by a decadent crème brûlée for dessert. One of the highlights was creating their own chocolate garnishes and signing their presentations in chocolate—a fun and creative touch that brought out their individuality and flair.
The experience was both engaging and informative, offering valuable insight into the expectations of the hospitality industry and allowing students to learn from an expert in the field. The chef shared professional tips and guidance, encouraging all students to take pride in their work and challenge themselves with new techniques.

Parents, carers and staff were delighted to watch the parade and see the hard work and creativity that went into each hat. The judges had a very tough job choosing winners, but every student who participated was celebrated for their effort and enthusiasm.
Following the parade, students enjoyed the much-anticipated Easter Egg Hunt. Laughter and squeals of excitement filled the playground as students searched high and low for hidden eggs. Our school volunteers and staff ensured the event ran smoothly, and every child left with a smile and a chocolate treat.
We wish our school community a happy and safe Easter break!
