A Day with Clay

Discovering the art of clay through play and exploration

The K4 groups had A Day with Clay incursion last week where children learned to express their ideas and make meaning using the medium of clay.

First, the children were introduced to clay, where it came from, the different types of clay, how to handle it, and different ways to dry it. After this, the children engaged in hands-on learning experiences: in small groups at the pottery wheel with Mark and at the table where they each have two lumps of clay to create with.

Children could choose to make a unicorn’s horn, a small bowl, a volcano, or a heart-shaped bowl using the pottery wheel. Then they could explore, engage in trial-and-errors and let their imagination take flight to create whatever they wanted at the table.

Both the Koalas and Possums were so immersed in their creative endeavours that two hours simply flew by! The children were so proud of what they made and really enjoyed the learning process to produce their special clay pieces.
