Kinder/Year 1

We've combined our Kindergarten and Year 1 students for a joint daily writing lesson this term! Our Kinder students have shown impressive growth, now writing full sentences and demonstrating significant writing stamina, making this a natural and exciting step.
Our one-hour session daily is about much more than putting pen to paper! Our writing is deeply inspired by reading quality texts to build background knowledge and expand vocabulary. Currently, we are exploring celebrations around the world. Last week, we "visited" the Japanese Sakura Festival, and this week we're soaring with an international kite festival in India. This learning dovetails beautifully with studies of geography and history.
Reading these information texts sparks lively discussions, helping the students learn and understand new words and ideas. This foundational work ensures that when they begin to write, they are fully engaged and brimming with diverse concepts.
In every lesson, we are developing essential skills that will serve them in older grades. We discuss parts of speech, practice using 'because,' 'but,' and 'so' as conjunctions to write about cause and effect, and master the four sentence types: statements, questions, exclamations, and commands. We're also learning powerful phrases to add rich details to their statement sentences.
It's a power-packed hour of learning, creativity, and skill-building every day!
