Maths Olympiad

During Term 2 and 3, 60 enthusiastic mathematicians from Years 3 to 6 have been stretching their thinking by participating in the 2025 Maths Olympiad competition.
The Maths Olympiad is a national problem-solving competition that challenges students to apply their mathematical understanding in new and complex ways. It helps develop maths problem solving skills, persistence, logical reasoning, and strengthen mathematical thinking.
Each fortnight, Magill students attended training sessions to learn problem-solving strategies. From drawing diagrams and identifying patterns to the all-important skill of working backwards (and occasionally sideways!). They then put their learning to the test, sitting four national competition papers filled with delightfully complex challenges involving missing digits, multiple operations, and those infamous multi-step problems that can make even their teacher pause and reconsider the best strategy to use.
We’re proud to share that our National Team, consisting of 3 Year 5 and 24 Year 6 students, placed in the top 15% of schools across Australia. A fantastic result that reflects both the students’ dedication and the strong mathematical learning culture at Magill School. All 60 participants showed persistence, creativity, and true problem-solving grit.
All students participating in the 2025 Maths Olympiad program received certificates to acknowledge their hard work, dedication and achievement. The following students also received awards for their high level of achievement in this years competition:
