Student Learning

This term in Science, our focus is on Science as a Human Endeavour. Our Reception students have been discovering what it means to be a scientist! They’ve been asking thoughtful questions, making careful observations, and exploring the exciting work of Australian scientists — beginning with those investigating algal blooms in our oceans. To bring their learning to life, the students even dressed up as scientists and shared their own “big questions” about the world around them. Meanwhile, our Year 1 and 2 students are delving into the fascinating world of prehistoric animals. Through the work of palaeontologists, they’re discovering how fossils provide clues about the past, how dinosaurs can be compared with modern animals to understand evolution and adaptation, and how humans continue to shape the environment. Across all year levels, students are developing an understanding that science helps us make sense of the world — using curiosity, evidence, and investigation to build knowledge about our environment and the life within it.
The students in Year 3 and 4 are getting their hands dirty this term becoming junior soil scientists and geologists! We have explored and collected soil samples from across the school to find out their unique blend of sand, silt, and clay along with other ingredients like organic matter. In coming lessons, we will do texture testing with 'clay ribbons', compare colours and soil layers, and classify rocks and minerals according to their observable properties. This term Science is really rocking our world!
Here are some wonderful pictures of our Reception students exploring different areas of science and asking the questions they’re most curious to find the answers to!
KABOOM PERCUSSION VISIT MAGILL
This is our super duper awesome report on the amazingly, musically, wonderfully and brilliant……… KABOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! By N5 and N6
The Magill School students were fortunate enough to watch an awesome performance, called ‘KABOOM Percussion’. Laura and Aiden used many different household items to create great pieces of music. They were super fast at playing their home made instruments. The drums made out of buckets sounded amazing. They made a Pigaphone that made cool sounds. When Aiden used the Flappy Hands, we all started laughing, he was sooooooooooooooooooo funny. When he used ‘Tiny Hands’ to play the instruments, we thought that was clever. The 3 Little Pigs play was surprising and different to the original story. We liked how fast they played the drums at the end. Josef and Nina got to hold the pans and help with the performance. The Boom Tubes made interesting sounds. The different sized percussion instruments made incredible sounds.
At the end they played music on drums that they made themselves out of a 3D printer. Choosing different instruments was lots of mega fun. If we could do something differently, we would love to have all stood up at the end and had a whole group dance.
Overall, we thought it was a clever and fanfairytastic fun show.
Thanks to Ms Milda and Ms Georgea for organising this mega awesome show.
