We began the term Skip counting by twos, threes, fives and tens. Students were immersed in an array of number based games and songs that focused on looking for patterns and building number sense.
We then explored the language of Chance by unpacking words such as 'impossible', 'unlikely', 'might happen', 'equal chance', 'likely' 'will happen' and 'certain'. This language was used to determine the likelihood of everyday events occurring.
Our next focus was on the duration of time, including months, weeks, seasons, days and hours. Students have become proficient in naming and ordering the months and seasons within a calendar year. Students explored how to use calendars by identifying features such as the days of the week, how the numbers in a month link together and how they add up to make a whole year. We discussed leap years and when they are likely to occur, along with why we have them.
Did you know that a leap year occurs because it takes 365 and a quarter days for the Earth to orbit the Sun? That means, every 4 years there is an extra day that needs to be filled in a calendar year and this is why we have leap years.
Towards the end of the unit, students learnt about the Indigenous seasons and compared them to traditional calendar system s such as the January to December - Gregorian system. Students learnt that the First Nations people do not mark their seasons by months of the year, rather they look for changes in the environment around them by observing the plants, water and stars.
Term One has finished up with some investigations involving money. Students have been able to identify the value of coins and notes, along with ordering them in value from smallest to largest. The week will conclude with students being given $20.00 to go shopping and they will try to create money amounts for the items they wish to purchase.
On Friday, March 15th, we enjoyed our first whole school event for 2024, which was a creative spin on the traditional 'colour fun run'. We were supported by Food Bank (who provides our school with the supplies used in Breakfast Club) and participated in the 'Food Fight'. No real food was thrown, however the teachers did enjoy throwing pretend fruit shaped sponges.
What an amazing, fun week we had at Knox Leisureworks! The students were wonderful and we were super proud of them for demonstrating their perseverance to make it to the end of the week.
Thankyou for a great start to the year. Without your support, we could not offer the wide array of opportunities available for our students.
Year Two Take Home Reading Diaries are checked on Monday each week.
Students will be given an opportunity to change their books for the week during this time. If students do not wish to use school books, they can read a text of their choice.
