Girton Racing Team

On Saturday 2 March, 13 Girton Racing Team members headed off to Casey Fields for the first round of the Victorian HPV (Human Powered Vehicle) series. In this series, students can compete in races all over Victoria, from Calder Park to Sandown. In this particular race, we entered one trike (Intrepid) into the training category, and with much hard work from Isla Westbrook, Xavier Potter, Henry Hall, Dylan Currie, Emily Currie, Xavier Witham, Liam Witham, Thomas Andrews, Teagan Whiteman, Caitlyn Whiteman, Sebastien Loraine, Blair Horsburgh and Charlie Whelan, we managed to take out 7th place in the Open category, and 50th overall.

As this was the first race of the year, many new members got the chance to experience a proper race for the first time. As well as getting some extra training in, they gained invaluable hands-on experience working in the pits. To help prepare for the main race at Maryborough in October this year, the Girton Racing Team will be entering as many events as possible throughout the year, and potentially even venturing to South Australia for the first time since COVID! All the Girton Racing Team members will be training every Friday, and we are encouraging all our members to work on their fitness in the lead-up to the major events.

We would like to say a massive thank you to all the parents who volunteered, not only for taking the time to drive their kids to the event (and, in some cases, other people's kids), but also for engaging with the team and showing so much enthusiasm for the upcoming races. Without such a great parent community, our team would not be able to function and none of us would be able to experience all the incredible opportunities we get here at Girton.

It was great to see the leadership skills demonstrated by all the students, and a special thanks to Dylan Currie, who led the Girton Racing Team with distinction on the day. Dylan ensured all team members received time in the vehicle and coordinated the pit stops to ensure effective and streamlined changes. Also, a big thank you to Robin Kirby for making Intrepid look so sleek.

Overall, we couldn’t be more proud of the Girton Racing Team, and with trikes already entered in three more races, we can’t wait to see what the rest of the year will bring!
