Girton Community Action Group
On Thursday 21 March, Girton Grammar School recognised Harmony Day. This is a day to celebrate all that is wonderful about our multicultural country and to remember how important it is to appreciate, respect and honour the many different cultures that have contributed to Australia as we know it today. Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country – from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world. Did you know that:
- Almost half of all Australians today were born overseas?
- Australians identify with more than 300 different ancestries?
- 85% of Australians agree that multiculturalism has made Australia a better place to live!
To celebrate Harmony Day, the Girton Community Action Group (GCAG) organised some fun activities, music and a stall selling cupcakes, spiders and jelly cups. The theme was 'Orange', which is the colour of Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Thank you to everyone who contributed to today's activities. The stall raised more than $380, which will be donated to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC).
In Term 2, we will be showcasing Girton's multicultural diversity with a special assembly featuring the talents of students and staff with different cultural backgrounds.
Happy Harmony Day!
