Interschool sport in secondary schools is a little different to how it is run in Primary schools. We are a part of the Maribyrnong Division so will complete against Maribyrnong College (not their academy students), Brookside P-9 College, Creekside K-9 College, Southern Cross Grammar, Footscray High School, Braybrook College, Victorian College of the Arts and eventually Lakeview Senior College. The division runs Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics carnivals but also runs summer & winter sports (in terms 1, 2 and 3) as a round robin tournament on one day in the term for each year level eg: 26th March for summer sport in 2024. There are also a larger variety of sports on offer.
This term we have held trials for Cricket, Baseball, Volleyball and Tennis and will have our first teams represent Yarrabing Secondary College next Tuesday 26th March. Payment and consent for these events can only be completed using the Compaparent account (students cannot pay and consent). Thank you to the teachers for offering to coach and students for trying out, we have teams in Girls Tennis, Boys Tennis, Boys Cricket, Girls Volleyball and Boys Volleyball, unfortunately we didn’t have enough to offer a Boys Baseball, Girls Cricket or Girls Softball team but will try and get teams in these sports next year.
In what seems like forever ago, we held our first Yarrabing sport event. Our swimming trials were held at Melton Waves on Monday 19th February.
Thirteen of our enthusiastic students arrived at school at 7.30am, hopped on the bus then swam against the clock to try and qualify for the Maribyrnong Division Swimming Carnival. Swimming in an outdoor 50m pool at 8am is definitely a tough ask, especially when you forget your goggles. However our champions put aside these challenges and tried their best. Unfortunately only one student made the qualifying times and was selected to head to the Division swimming carnival.
Meet William, who is the first student to represent Yarrabing Secondary College in any sport. Will qualified to represent the school through the swimming trials. He swam 50m Backstroke, 50m Breastroke and 50m freestyle at the Maribyrnong Division. Will headed off to East Keilor Leisure Centre to represent our school, he finished 5th in his first event, 4th in his second event and with a little more determination, continued with his progression and made it onto the dias and finished 3rd in his last event.
Well done William, we are proud of your efforts and glad you got a ribbon in your first swimming carnival representing our school.
