From the Principal

This week we celebrate Harmony Week, a week to celebrate Australia’s multiculturalism. Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect, being united by a set of core values and establishing a sense of belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic backgrounds.

Harmony Day (part of Harmony week), is held every year on 21 March and since 1966 coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Australia has a rich indigenous history and is also one of the most multicultural societies on earth, comprising of people from every corner of the globe. We may be many, but we are one and the sum of our different backgrounds, different experiences and different cultures makes us a great nation.

I was born in Northern Ireland during what was referred to as “the troubles” that took place for more than 30 years.

My family believed that we could make more of life and did not want to raise my sister and I during this time in Belfast. Shortly after my birth my family looked to immigrate to Australia or Canada, with Adelaide ultimately being our final destination. I am very grateful for the opportunities that our move to Australia has given me. Whilst I still enjoy visiting Belfast and catching up with our relatives, I will always call Australia home.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Cultural Leaders Mia Ngo and Akot Garang for their enthusiasm and commitment in coordinating the various activities this week, shining a light on Endeavour’s multiculturalism and celebrating our cultural diversity.
