Spotlight on Learning

Stage 1

2I have had a fantastic start to the school year!

For the past couple of weeks, we have been reading 'Sophie Scott Goes South', by Alison Lester. It is an amazing picture book, describing the adventures of Sophie as she travels to Antarctica on the Aurora Australis.

Students have completed information texts on a variety of different animals found in the Antarctica area, such as the Chinstrap penguin, Emperor Penguin, Weddell Seal and Killer Whale. As well as creative artworks, imagining what Sophie would see outside her porthole.

2I enjoyed celebrating Harmony Day and working with the 5J students to create our school mural triangles.

Stage 2

The EAL/D class supports students who come from a language background other than English. The program is designed to focus on developing oral, reading, and writing skills tailored to the individual needs of students. The program contains a variety of teaching and learning activities to engage students. Lessons strike a balance between providing challenges and offering support, ensuring every student enjoys an enriching learning journey.

STAGE 2: WHAT WE’RE LEARNING

The stage 2 writing and grammar support groups' focus for this term is looking at persuasive writing. Our students are exploring rhetorical questions, high modality, and emotive language to add persuasive punch to their writing. Through practice, they're mastering the art of using these tools to make their writing more compelling and improve the quality of their sentences.

Year 6/Kindergarten Buddy Activities

We're excited to share the experiences our students have been having through our Year 6 and Kindergarten buddy activities. These sessions are not only about fostering friendships but also about exploring the concept of individuality.

Our Year 6 mentors have been exemplary in guiding their younger peers through various collaborative activities, such as arts and crafts projects and storytelling sessions. Through these interactions, they've shown patience, empathy, and leadership, exemplifying the importance of embracing differences.

For our Kindergarten students, these sessions have been invaluable lessons in acceptance and inclusivity. They're learning early on that everyone is unique and that diversity should be celebrated. Furthermore, these buddy activities have provided our Year 6 students with opportunities for self-reflection. As they mentor their younger buddies, they're reminded of their own uniqueness and develop a deeper appreciation for diversity.

Beyond the classroom, these interactions have had a positive ripple effect throughout our school community, promoting empathy and respect among students, parents, and teachers alike.

We're thrilled to see the positive impact these buddy activities are having and look forward to continuing to celebrate individuality and nurture understanding and acceptance among our students.

Narrative Planning

6L have been studying and writing narratives during Term 1. As a final exercise, the students were asked to write a narrative with the prompt, “Found”. The class have discussed the importance of having a plan for their narratives to ensure they create tension, build characters, describe settings in detail and have complications that are solvable. Below are two very different, but very effective, plans for narratives. The first is by Edessa and the second from Jayden.
