Welcome to 6B and 2025! It’s another year and another cohort of Year Six students eagerly anticipating their final year of primary school and the prospect of starting high school. Collaboration, building rich connections, and developing a positive classroom culture of learning, have been the core focuses for Level Six and the whole school in our first week back from the summer break. Below is small a snapshot of what teaching and learning in the first week of 2025 looked like for 6B and the rest of Level Six.
With the lens of connection and wellbeing, students began their first day of the year by settling-in and reconnecting. We opted to begin the day by playing a game of charades, where students mimed and acted-out their holidays adventures for rest of the class to guess. From surfing in the gold coast to road trips to Adelaide, it seems the summer holidays were packed full of action and joy!
This year we are continuing with our whole school wellbeing program The Resilience Project (TRP), which forms a fundamental part of the first week of 2025 and our ongoing social and emotional learning. One of our first lessons was centered around emotional literacy, where we explored strategies for expressing and coping with complex emotions through poetry. Students crafted haikus, describing their emotions through vivid language choices and connections nature.
Furthermore, to foster a positive classroom culture and sense of harmony, we explored the concept of ‘inclusion.’ We explore different forms of inclusion and exclusion, and how both forms of action can impact an individual and their sense of belonging. This culminated in a series of role plays, where students collaboratively performed short acts with the intent of encouraging others to be more inclusive and welcoming.
Below are some student reflections on the importance of inclusion:
“I learned that including someone helps not only the person that you are including but also yourself because you can build new relationships and connections.” - Ryan
“Don’t exclude others. There is never a good reason to do it.” - Diyon
“My biggest takeaway from the lesson was that there is always a way to be inclusive towards others.” - Chloe
