MITOSIS IN GARLIC ROOT TIPS - YEAR 11 BIOLOGY
We sprang into action for our first VCE biology experiment, exploring the world of cells under the microscope and admiring the complex steps of mitosis in living cells. Unlike being in a standard classroom, this experiment gave us a new perspective from the standard slideshows that we usually do.
Taking through the steps of setting our wet mount slide, our teacher, Ms Johnstone, guided us through the process of viewing the microscopic cells in a garlic root. The process involved heating the root in hydrochloric acid and eventually placing it under the microscope for us to view.
What we saw was extraordinarily fascinating, individual cells and their nucleus being clearly visible to us under the highly focused lens of the microscope. This would be one of the most memorable experiments we ever did.
