A message from our principal

Dear Sunbury College Community,

As we close the year and look back on the journey we have taken together, I feel an immense sense of pride in what we have achieved as a school community. This year has been filled with remarkable milestones, moments of growth, and countless examples of the resilience, responsibility, respect, and endeavour that define Sunbury College.

Our students have excelled not only in their academic pursuits but also in sports, the arts, and leadership endeavors. Whether it was through their achievements in the classroom, on the stage, or out on the sporting field, our students have consistently displayed dedication and a commitment to excellence. They are a credit to their families, their teachers, and themselves.

I would like to highlight three students who have excelled in each of our school values.

Congratulations to Tyler Baba on being the Sunbury College Dux for 2024 with an ATAR score of 90.65. Tyler is a high achiever and incredibly committed to his studies and always willing to do the work necessary to achieve his best. He can often be seen before and after school in the library, working diligently with his teachers and seeking guidance to ensure he achieved the academic success he was aiming for. Tyler is part of a loving and supportive family - two younger siblings also attend Sunbury College who he is very close with and who he is always there for. He has a close group of friends at school - his positive support for them was always evident. Tyler is hoping to be accepted into Biomedical Science (Scholars Program) at Monash University, with a long-term goal to study medicine.

An amazing accomplishment was also achieved by Kim Deeble on scoring an ATAR of 90.30 and was Sunbury College’s Dux Proximus for 2024. Kim is incredibly committed to her studies; always willing to do the work necessary to achieve her best.  A Vice School Captain in 2024 along with Tyler, Kim is an active member of our school community, and always leads by example. Kind and supportive of everyone, she is eager to learn, curious, highly motivated, and takes every challenge in her stride. Kim’s dedication and commitment to all her studies, including her STEM studies is abundantly clear to all and has resulted in exceptional academic results. She has excelled in her STEM subjects throughout her time at Sunbury College and aspires to enter the field of Biomedical Science. Kim has loving and supportive parents that are beyond proud of her.

I want to highlight the outstanding achievement of Year 11 student Travis Boase, who scored a 50 for his study score in VET Music Performance, meaning he performed in the top 0.3% of students enrolled in the subject across the state. Travis has been an active member of our school performing arts community, taking on a lead role in our school productions and being part of our instrumental music program. Travis was a principal vocalist in the 2024 Victorian State School Spectacular, another amazing achievement this year.

There are many other individual success stories across our VCE and VCE VM students, and families should be very proud of each of their children and the qualities they have demonstrated throughout this year. I have been at our school for 11 years and this year was our biggest Year 12 cohort in my time here. The school achieving a 100% VCE completion rate is a fantastic achievement for our Sunbury College community. I look forward to hearing over the next few months the desired pathways our students are pursuing.

On Wednesday 11th November, we celebrated our Awards Night in recognition of our Year 7-11 students who were the recipients of Principal’s Award, Elite Principal’s Awards, or subject dux awards for their consistently outstanding endeavour this semester. It was wonderful to see our community come together at Lakeside Convention Centre in Taylors Lakes, and applaud their achievements.

Earlier this term, I had the absolute pleasure of accompanying 28 students and 3 other staff members on our first international trip since the pandemic. As a group, we navigated Osaka, Kyoto and Toyko over the course of eight days, filled with highlights including temples, shrines, Universal Studios, downtown Tokyo, a mild earthquake, the Bullet Train and Mt Fuji and much more. The trip presented a once in a lifetime opportunity for our students to visit our sibling school, Nagano High School in Osaka and spend time strengthening the bond between the two schools. Congratulations to all students who took part in the trip. Your maturity, zest and willingness to make the most of the experience is something that I am very proud to have witnessed. Well done on making the most of this opportunity! 2025 will see Sunbury College again welcome students and staff from Nagano High.

As we step into the holiday season, I encourage everyone to take time to rest, reflect, and recharge. Let us celebrate our accomplishments and look forward to the opportunities the new year will bring.

Wishing you all a safe and joyful holiday season.

Best wishes,

Craig O’Bree
