Tasmanian Science Talent Search (TSTS) Innovation Challenge - Congratulations!
In Term 2, Year 9 and 10 STEM students entered the Tasmanian Science Talent Search (TSTS) Innovation Challenge. The TSTS has been operating for over 30 years, and aims to:
- Inspire a lifelong interest in science
- Promote high quality teaching and learning
- Highlight a Pathway to Excellence
Students were challenged to engineer a solution to habitat loss for endangered species in Tasmania, with a particular focus on their local area. All STEM students produced fantastic entries, engineering ways to help some of our wonderful wildlife, including the forty-spotted pardalote, the swift parrot, Arthur’s galaxias and the red handfish.
In wonderful news, two of our entries were selected for first and second place statewide in Division 5 – Years 9 and 10!
The winner was Zoe Wigg in Year 10 with her wonderful innovation to protect the nests of Tasmanian azure Kingfishers, who make their nests in riverbanks which are prone to flooding. Zoe’s design creates a barrier which diverts water away from the nests and keeps them dry.
In second place were Year 10 students Zoe Clune and George Mepham, with their fantastic design of tunnels to prevent quolls from needing to cross roads and risk getting hit by cars.
These students were presented their awards on Tuesday night at an awards ceremony at the University of Tasmania.
Congratulations to all STEM students for their wonderful designs, with an extra congratulations to our award winners!

Making Gingerbread Houses
The Foods and Textiles classes have been creating gingerbread houses they have made from scratch. They have been learning icing basics and practising their design ideas, learning to work with imperfect pieces to create something fun and beautiful.
