"Making Waves in the Art Room:

A Colourful Journey through Line, Pattern, and Creativity!"

Prep CM & SG: Exploring Line, Pattern, and Colour!

This term, our Prep students have been busy learning about different types of lines—straight, curved, curly, and zigzag! They also explored patterns by creating repeating lines to make fun and interesting designs. As part of their learning, they practiced using colour carefully, choosing different colours for each section of their artwork and applying watercolours with care. Their final pieces were bright, creative, and a wonderful showcase of their new skills!

Year 1CJ: Turtle Line Drawings

Our Year One students focused on the art element of Line by following step-by-step instructions to draw a large turtle that filled most of their paper. They then decorated their turtles using repeating patterns, including zigzags, straight lines, waves, and swirls, to add unique details to their artwork. Each student created a beautifully detailed turtle, demonstrating their growing confidence in using line and pattern.

Year 2NH & 2HV: Insect Paintings

In Year Two, students explored Colour and Pattern by using markers to fill their insect drawings with repeated elements, creating vibrant and intricate designs. They also learned about Balance, ensuring their insects were symmetrical, with both sides mirroring each other. By the end of the lesson, students had created stunning insect paintings that showcased their understanding of colour, pattern, and symmetry.

Year 4JT, 4ST & 4ME: The Great Wave Paintings

In Year Four, students explored the use of colour while creating their own paintings inspired by The Great Wave. Using watercolours, they experimented with warm and cool colour combinations to bring their waves to life. By adjusting the amount of water in their paints, they created lighter shades, adding depth and movement to their artwork. Their final paintings beautifully captured the energy of the ocean, showing their creativity and growing confidence with colour mixing and application.

Year 5DG & 5SC: Pop Art Portraits

In Year Five, students explored primary colours and used them to create vibrant Pop Art portrait paintings. They carefully painted different sections of their portraits and applied Ben-Day dots using a variety of tools, including texta lids, crayons, cotton filters, and Q-Tips. The success criteria focused on painting primarily with primary colours and incorporating the dot stamping technique. Students ensured their artwork was bold and dynamic by filling most areas with colour while intentionally leaving some sections white for contrast. The final pieces showcased their creativity and understanding of Pop Art techniques.

Year 6EK & 6SJ: Pop Art Portraits

In Year Six, students created stunning personalized eye drawings inspired by the Surrealist artist René Magritte. They focused on adding colour and detail using various mediums, including coloured pencils and chalk pastels. By applying blending and feathering techniques, they successfully rendered realistic features such as eyebrows, eyelashes, and skin tones, while also designing imaginative backgrounds. Their success criteria included carefully outlining their drawings, considering the element of space, and achieving a smooth, natural effect around the eye. The final artworks showcased their unique artistic expression and growing technical skills.

It has been a fantastic start to the year in the Art Room, and I can’t wait to see what the students create next!

Kind regards,
