Mobile Phones at Heathmont

We thank the vast majority of our students who behave in accordance with our Mobile Phone Policy and respond respectfully to staff in relation to this policy. However we are seeing a growing number of students who believe they are entitled to carry and use their phones throughout the day, a behaviour that occurs in direct contravention to the Mobile Phone - Student Use Ministerial policy - formally issued by the Minister for Education under section 5.2.1(2)(b) of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic).

Furthermore, a number of students also ignore requests from staff to hand these phones over when they are seen, which is simply unacceptable. A reminder that:

  • Following 2 confiscations of a mobile phone, a parent or guardian will be required to pick up their child’s mobile phone at the conclusion of the school day or the next convenient time. The student will not be permitted to take the phone with them. (Students will be given a clean slate at the start of each term).
  • Failing to comply with a reasonable and clear instruction of a staff member to hand over the phone will be met with further consequences.

We hope that the seriousness of these consequences prompts students to avoid removing their phone from their locker at any part of the school day.

We are serious about improving the learning of our students and we encourage you to explore the information on this Departmental page that discusses the impact on students of mobile phone use.
