Humanities excursions

Year 10 Humanities (core) Geography Fieldtrip to Half Moon Bay (Black Rock) and Middle Brighton Beach (Brighton)

On Wednesday 12th of March, Mr Grant, Mr Shannon and Mrs Graham took half of the Year 10 students to Half Moon Bay (Black Rock) and Middle Brighton Beach (Brighton) for their Geography Fieldtrip in preparation for their first CAT of the year.

Students were collecting data about natural features and processes and human uses of the coastline.

They also examined existing management strategies and will be proposing their own ideas to assist with caring for our coasts in Port Phillip Bay.

It was a hot day but we all had an enjoyable day at the beach (and in the nice cool coach on the way home!)

Year 7 Humanities Geography Fieldtrip to Dandenong Creek

On Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th of March 7A, 7B, 7C and 7D attended their first Geography Fieldtrip for Humanities.

Accompanying them was Ms Boyd, Mrs Graham, Mr Freeling and Mr Meagher. The other 2 Year 7 classes will be attending next week. We walked from school all the way down to the bridge at HE Parker Reserve and back again in 2 periods! Along the way we were taking photos, testing water and making observations.

The Dandenong Creek is a feature of our school neighbourhood that so many of us walk or ride along almost every day but it’s not until we stopped and really took it all in that many students realised just how much there is to understand about this complex, beautiful and diverse environment. We were studying the natural and urban water cycle, how we use the creek as a resource and how authorities and locals are trying to look after it. We saw lots of water birds, heaps of cyclists and even a snake!

A massive thank you to Mr John Cull (a retired Science teacher) who is a volunteer with First Friends of Dandenong Creek who spoke to us about why he loves the creek, what FFDC do to help look after the creek and all about the Daylighting Project carried out in 2018 to ‘re-naturalise’ the creek under and around the bridge. We all had a great time and our Year 7 Humanities teachers are looking forward to reading the student’s Common Assessment Tasks, using the data they collected on the day.
