Message from the

School Principal

Mrs Kaylene Carlin

Dear Sacred Heart Families,

Over the past two weeks, our students at Sacred Heart Primary School have shown incredible dedication and resilience as they completed their NAPLAN assessments.

I am immensely proud of each and every one of them for the effort they put into their learning and for approaching these assessments with a positive mindset.

It is important to remember however that NAPLAN is just one way of measuring progress—it’s a snapshot in time, capturing a small part of a much bigger picture. While it provides valuable information about some aspects of literacy and numeracy, it doesn’t reflect the full range of skills, talents and qualities that our students possess.

What truly matters is the consistent effort they put into their learning journey every single day. At Sacred Heart, we celebrate not only academic achievements but also the growth of character, creativity, and compassion in our students. Whether it’s their kindness towards others, their perseverance when faced with challenges or their enthusiasm for learning, these are the qualities that define their success.

Let’s take this opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work our students have put into NAPLAN, while also reminding them—and ourselves—that they are so much more than a test result. Thank you to our dedicated educators and families for their unwavering support throughout this process. Together, we will continue to nurture well-rounded, resilient, and confident learners who are equipped for all aspects of life.

Naplan Reflections by Year 3 students

After completing their first two NAPLAN tests last week, Grade 3 students engaged in meaningful self-reflection and open dialogue. Linking to our Inquiry focus on wellbeing, students were encouraged to check in with their emotions, express their thoughts, and share their experiences with peers. This reflective discussion fostered a supportive environment, allowing students to listen, connect, and learn from one another.

Footsteps of St Paul pilgrimage

I am excited and feel privileged to share with you that over the next two weeks I will be embarking on a Footsteps of St Paul Pilgrimage, a journey that will take me through some of the most significant sites of St Paul’s ministry, with other school principals of Catholic primary schools in the Western suburbs. This pilgrimage is an opportunity for me to deepen my faith and reflect on the profound legacy of St Paul, whose dedication to spreading the Gospel continues to inspire us in our mission as a Catholic school.

As Principal of Sacred Heart, it is essential for me to continue growing in my own faith and leadership. This pilgrimage will not only enrich my spiritual journey but also strengthen my commitment to guiding our community with compassion, wisdom and a deeper understanding of our Catholic tradition. I look forward to bringing back insights and experiences that will further support our collective journey in faith and education.

In my absence, Cath Palmer (cpalmer@shnewport.catholic.edu.au) will be stepping into the role of Acting Principal. I have every confidence in her leadership and know that the school will be in capable hands during this time. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Cath for her willingness to take on this responsibility and to the entire school community for your continued support. Cath will be well supported by our very capable and dedicated leadership team, including Erin in her role as Deputy Principal.

Thank you for your prayers and encouragement as I undertake this pilgrimage. I look forward to sharing my experiences with you upon my return.

I remain yours in faith and gratitude,

Kaylene Carlin
