Foundation Classroom News

What a busy time it has been in the Foundation area this fortnight!  We've been experiencing lots of new types of learning and have worked really hard to do our personal best.  Well done everyone!

Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic this term is 'Shaping Identity'. The foci of the unit are:

  • What are the things we like?  How can I share these with my friends?
  • What things are important to me? ie our families, pets
  • Working together - what does collaborative learning look and feel like?
  • Staying healthy.  What are the differences between 'Always' and 'Sometimes' foods?

One of our first activities was to create a collage with buddy. The children worked collaboratively and actively demonstrated skills of listening to each other and negotiation.  Here are some of our masterpieces!

Literacy

In Phonics we are moving onto our next group of letters m, d, g, o, c and f.  By adding these letters, we will be able to read and write a greater number of words.  The Foundation students have also started to use their writing books to copy a sentence created as a class and to draw a picture to match.  We were so proud of ourselves :-)

Oral Language

Show and Share.

The children are really enjoying presenting during 'Show and Share'. All students have now had the opportunity to share something that is important to them with their classmates.  I've put together a timetable for Show and Share so that we have an allocated time for each child.  This will be sent home in the green pouches next week.

Maths

The Foundations have enjoyed using concrete materials to investigate counting, patterns and shape.  We have used a range of objects such as dominoes, unifix blocks, counters, teddy bears and cotton reels.  If you have a chance, ask your child to choose some items from around the house so that they can show you the skills they have learnt.
