Ulverstone Head of Art

By far, the most exciting aspect of the Arts at Leighland this year is the commencement of our production - School of Rock. One of the members of the production team, Mr Beer reports on the progress:
"We are busy rehearsing in preparation for the production in Term 3. School of Rock is going to live up to its name as the students get ready to perform in the Andrew Lloyd Webber show. We’ve got the cast set and the Art department is busy on the sets and backdrops.
Unsurprisingly, Mr Legg and the music team have plenty to do right now. We’ll have updates coming in Term 2 when we have costumes and props to show off. Until then, students are learning their lines and getting comfortable with direction. Thanks to all the parents who have agreed to pick up their kids after school once or twice a week; it’s a big commitment for the students, but it’s the extra effort from parents that makes it all possible!"
Thanks Mr Beer, a lot to look forward to in coming months!
The school has recently received its latest clay mural instalment which will see the completion of that installation on the end wall of the science block, facing the Fake Grass area. The theme for this latest panel was ‘Coral Reefs’ and was inspired by the work of American ceramic artist - Courtney Mattinson. There are a few more tiles to be fixed in place later in the year and with all three panels completed, it truly lifts the environment of the school.
The Drama department have been busy establishing key knowledge and skills in the 7/8 Drama class, with Mrs Joubert at the helm. Key components such as elements of Drama, development of characters and improvisation, are all applied to the theme of ‘Fractured Fairytales- Little Red Riding Hood’. I have seen some of the creative interpretations of this classic and the results are surprising and hilarious. Students dressed up for improvisation in the MP Hall where they had to practice voice projection. I am looking forward to these being performed at our MADE Night later next term.
There are many other things on the go in each of the Creative Arts classes that will eventually find their way to a performance opportunity or display of some kind in the coming months. Say tuned for updates!
Until then, stay creative!
