Focus on Learning

Stage 3

Mrs Sharnie Meade & Mrs Rebecca Hofman

Literacy

This term students are reading Storm Boy with a focus on narrative development and the use of rich descriptive language. Over the past weeks students have explored the use of simile, metaphor and personification in written descriptions and have used their understanding of these to compose their own descriptive compositions on Quirindi and Finger Bone Bill, a character in Storm Boy.

Enjoy a sample of these quality descriptive passages below.

Mathematics - Mrs Meade

This term we have already launched into some great learning with our Mathematics.

We have had a focus on negative numbers; learning about the term "integer", how negative numbers occur in everyday contexts, and using a numberline to show negative number accurately.   See some of our learning below:

In Mrs Meade's group, as well as Mrs Wilson's group, we have now moved onto the unit, "Additive Relations".  In this unit the students are exposed to a range of addition and subtraction strategies, with the focus being on finding the one that is most efficient for THEM.  Mrs Meade's group is working hard on multistep word problems, involving different operations.

Mathematics - Mrs Hofman

Maths with Mrs Hofman has centred around 3D objects, firstly looking at the features of these objects and using materials to build skeletal models. We are now moving into the investigation of nets and observing 3D objects from different views.

Science and Technology

Science this term is centred around space and our solar system. Our NASA Junior Space Education interns have been busy each week learning all about our place in the universe, our Star; the sun, and the 8 planets that orbit it. Each week, our interns excitedly wear their NASA intern badges as they complete their studies, which will culminate in a student choice intern project at the end of this term.

Sport

As a school we are lucky to have Aaron King, a local cricketer and parent, teaching us cricket skills.  5/6 loved the games played to build upon skills, even though the weather was very warm.  We are looking forward to our next session, and working towards playing a game of cricket soon.  A big "THANK YOU" to Aaron for his expertise and guidance!!
