Assistant Principal News

As well as my role as Assistant Principal I am fortunate to teach a Year 12 Ancient History class. This allows me to continue my passion for being in the classroom to work with young people in pursuing their passion for learning in this field.

Learning experiences do not always take place in the classroom and yesterday we were extremely fortunate to travel to Canberra to undertake an ‘Ancient Adventure’. After leaving very early in the morning, we ventured to the National Museum of Australia to attend the Interactive Pompeii exhibit. Here the students got to see artefacts that have left the Italian sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum for the first time and experience the eruption of Vesuvius first hand through an interactive digital eruption experience. They also were able to see artefacts that they had only viewed in text books and documentaries, allowing for History to really come alive.

After this, we travelled to the Australian National University where students were able to view the daily life of a university campus and attend the School of Classical studies to work with Department head Professor Caillan Davenport. During this experience students were able to engage with artefacts at the ANU Classics Museum and take part in a personalised learning experience with Professor Davenport learning about Rome, handling actual ancient coins, nails and pottery, viewing valued HSC evidence first hand and challenging the ethics around ‘how owns history’.

My thanks goes to Mr Will Lyon and the Yr 12 Ancient history students, it was a really fantastic experience.
