Dear MCC Community-parents and carers,
Last Wednesday, February 26th of March, the whole College gathered together to celebrate Mass with Fr Neil, Brother Gerry, Sister Theresa and Sister Colleen, and to acknowledge Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.
The season of Lent, the forty days leading to Easter Sunday and celebration of the risen Christ, centre on three major observances. These are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Prayer allows us to deepen our relationship with God, and through reflection, to engage with our own conscience; who we are in our deepest selves and how we show up in the world. Fasting does not necessarily mean restricting eating but instead invites a broader focus on developing our ability to cope with having and holding on to less rather than always wanting and grasping for more. Almsgiving reminds us that we have obligations towards the broader community-to our ‘neighbour’. We are reminded to give to those who have far less than ourselves, specifically through supporting charities to assist others.
The Catholic charity that is supported throughout the season of Lent is Project Compassion, through the missionary group Caritas Australia. Project Compassion focuses on the needs of those most vulnerable in our own community and in the world, with all funds raised during Lent for Project Compassion going to those who need it most. The theme for Project Compassion in 2025 is to Unite Against Poverty. During this season, let us continue to model the three pillars of Lent: to pray and reflect, to content ourselves with less, and to give what we can to support the most vulnerable. Remembering that in supporting those most in need, we are truly modelling Christ’s teaching to ‘love our neighbour as ourselves’ (Matthew, 22:39).
A beautiful celebration with Bishop Mark at the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) Deanery Mass last night where we warmly welcomed and commissioned our newest staff members to Catholic schools across our MIA parishes.
Lenten Prayer of Hope
God of our journey
we are all pilgrims of hope
brought together by your love
and your wish that we may all be one.
We pray that in this Year of Jubilee
when we are called to greater justice
and care for our common home
that we may Unite Against Poverty.
May we work in unity for the freedom of the oppressed
and the renewal of creation.
May our compassionate minds and generous hearts
help bring about a world where all can live in peace.
May our Lenten pilgrimage of fasting, almsgiving and prayer
bring us closer to your loving heart.
We ask this in the name of Jesus.
Amen
