NUMERACY - EXPLORING MATHS WITH YOUR CHILD AT HOME
As students move through their years of schooling, they are exposed to mathematical understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning.
These capabilities allow students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing mathematics to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently (VCAA, 2017).
Although numeracy instruction takes place in the classroom, there are numerous activities you can engage in with your child at home to support their mathematical development, even if the approach differs from how, you were taught mathematics. We use numeracy in our daily activities such as telling the time, when cooking, reading roadmaps and timetables. You can create opportunities at home to encourage a love of learning through exploration, engaging in situations that involve numeracy and learn alongside your child by sharing ideas and thoughts.
The Department of Education has some great resources for parents and carers online. You can explore and follow the interactive online guide here.
Your child’s teacher can also provide advice on your child’s level of achievement, the goals they are working towards, the support you can offer your child to achieve their goals and help you can provide to develop numeracy skills at home.
Thank you for your continued support in your child’s education.
