Year 5/6

Literacy

Students have been exploring narrative and persuasive writing including; developing a series of short stories about the same character and using strong emotive language. Students have enjoyed using ‘talk to text’ functions on their Chromebooks to help record writing ideas.  The talk function has successfully recorded students speaking in English, Khmer and/or Vietnamese.  They were then able to translate their ideas and develop their writing further. Students are continuing to work on their vocabulary through reading a range of genres and developing their reading fluency and comprehension through explicit teaching.  They have been answering questions to demonstrate their understandings about texts read and using clues from the text to make inferences.

Maths

Students have been exploring place value and using the four operations when solving equations. They were excited to get hands-on using a range of tools to improve their measurement skills. Being familiar with using a ruler to measure both centimetres and metres can be used to help solve a range of problems and apply this knowledge when representing different numbers on a number line. When learning about capacity, some students had to work out unknown capacities by estimating and then measuring the actual amount each container could hold.

Inquiry

Students are learning about Australia’s first people. They are making posters and other things, such as a slideshow. Students got to choose what topics they would like to research. Topics included: food, tools, shelter, dreamtime stories and clothing. They have been exploring why groups of people migrated to Australia and the changes that took place as a result.

Run Club

Every Wednesday morning students participate in ‘Run Club'. This is an opportunity for students to connect with peers and discuss things that they are doing both inside and outside of school time. It is an enjoyable time to help us improve both our mental and physical wellbeing.
