Literacy

In each newsletter, a Year level in the school will share some of the literacy activities they are doing in the classroom. It’s a great opportunity to see what books are being read and analysed and what writing genres each of the teams are learning about.

In this newsletter, the year 2’s are sharing what they are learning about in literacy.

Students in Year 2 have had a very busy start to the term! Each Year 2 class has embarked on their very first novel study about the text, ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl. A novel study allows students to develop their reading comprehension and thinking skills in a fun, engaging way while also building a love of reading. They have been enhancing reading comprehension skills such as identifying key words, visualising, predicting and making connections.

The students have been so engaged in this laugh-out-loud tale of George Kranky, who plots revenge on his mean and miserable Grandma by concocting a magic medicine for her. Little does he realise that the medicine will have weird and wonderful effects on the old lady’s body…

To support their understanding of the text, learners will also be exposed to Procedural texts during our Writing sessions in the upcoming weeks. They will learn about the language features and structures of Procedural Texts to then create their own rotten recipe, just like George has in our novel study! Students will also have the opportunity to follow their own recipes in class by mixing a range of different ingredients!
