Year 3 Update

Our learning Weeks 6 & 7
English
In English, we’re exploring the long ‘u’ vowel sound and working on simple sentences. We’re also learning to identify the main idea and supporting details in a text while continuing our narrative writing unit.
Maths
In Maths, we’re learning to write and represent numbers in the tens, hundreds, thousands, and tens of thousands using digits, place value, and words. We’re also working on rounding numbers to different place values, including the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, and beyond.
Inquiry
Our topic this term is 'How can I create a healthy me?'
Students will be investigating the connection between a healthy body and mind to contribute to healthy, safe and active environments.
Social and Emotional
In Social and Emotional Learning, we are learning to identify and name both comfortable and uncomfortable emotions that we may experience at school. We are also exploring ways to support others in feeling happy in the classroom and playground. Additionally, we are recognising the ways we are similar to and different from others and reflecting on strategies that help us cope with challenges or stress.
News and reminders
NAPLAN Reminder:
NAPLAN assessments will take place on the following dates, running across the first two sessions of the day, starting at 9.00am:
📌 Wednesday 12th March – Writing
📌 Thursday 13th March – Reading
📌 Friday 14th March – Conventions of Language
📌 Monday 17th March – Numeracy
Please ensure your child arrives at school on time each day, as the assessments will begin promptly in the morning. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the Year 3 team!
Drink bottles:
Please remember to bring a drink bottle to school every day. It saves disruption to your child's learning when this is accessible within the room. They are able to fill up their bottles in a nearby classroom.
Hats:
A friendly reminder that school hats are required to be worn during recess and lunch. Students who do not have a hat will have to spend recess and lunch under the shade sails. We also encourage wearing sunscreen and drinking plenty of water during the school day.
Take home readers:
Just a friendly reminder—if your child's blue reader bag is still at home, please send it in with them so we can get these organised.
Homework:
Starting from Week 4, students will be assigned homework tasks for the remainder of the term. They are expected to read at least 3–4 nights a week for around 10 minutes and record it in their reading log, which must be signed by a parent. In addition, students should complete 1–2 activities from their homework grid each week. Our approach is articulated in our Hillsmeade PS Homework Policy, which is accessible via our website.
