Year 5 & 6
Around our level
In Year 5/6 this year, we welcomed two new students, Ada and Eva. Both students have written a little about themselves, so please take a read!
Hi, my name is Ada and I'm really excited to be here at Yarra Road Primary School. I'm in Year 6 and my teacher is Mrs Haysom. I came from a school called Launceston Church Grammar School which was in Perth, Tasmania. I have two dogs and two horses at the moment. I also have two older brothers. When I’m not at school, I love to go horse riding, create art and have fun with my friends.
- Ada D
Hi, my name is Eva, and this is my first year in Yarra Road. I already love this school and I hope to have a wonderful time in my last year of primary school. I consider myself to be very lucky to be in this school for its 100th year. I like to play the keyboard, and my favourite thing to do is read. I came from India last year in May and I like Australia very much.
- Eva A
During the first four weeks of Term 1, Year 5 students have taken on the important role of helping the Preps settle into Yarra Road.
At playtimes, the Year 5 students guided their Prep buddies around the schoolyard, introduced them to new play areas, and ensured they felt safe and supported. The Buddy Program not only helps our Preps settle in, but it also helps our Year 5 students model our school values of Safety, Kindness, and Respect to our new Prep students and the whole school community.
Well done to our Year 5 students for being such fantastic role models! Take a read of some of their recounts about looking after their buddies.

When I first met my buddy, she was a bit shy. After a while, she started to feel more comfortable with me and the school. I noticed she really liked to play in the playground and move to different spots a lot. She told me a lot about her family and the things she does outside of school. When we only had to play with them for half of lunch, she would find her friends and play with them. Now she plays with her friends, says hi to me and gives me a hug every time she walks or runs past.
- Emily S
The main thing I really liked with the buddies was when we met them the first day and started to look after them. We had to spend the rest of the day in the Prep classroom making pictures with them. When we stopped looking after them, they always came running back to you and wanted to play.

I loved looking after my buddy because she was so sweet and kind to others. Even though a kid accidentally threw a ball at her face, she didn't cry. Shakira and I helped her, which put a smile on her face for the rest of that day. That's why I loved looking after my buddy.

At first, it was pretty hard leaving all my friends behind to look after my buddy. My first buddy was Kei, then I switched to a new buddy called Jeremy. I had lots of fun!
- Aaron L
It’s a lot of fun looking after my prep buddy. His name is Kei. I enjoyed the moment I met him. Kei was shy at first but then we played at the playground and more areas around the school. When he was ready, he got to play by himself and became more confident. I enjoy being Kei's buddy because it is so fun!
- Levi P
Looking after Frankie at the beginning of the year was an amazing experience. I enjoyed playing hide and seek everyday and watching her make heaps of new friends. It’s a lot of fun playing with her and seeing her with a gigantic smile on her face!

My buddy is so sweet and one day we were doing activities with them and when we had to leave she was so sad and gave me a big hug because she thought we weren't doing it anymore but we just had to do the roll. I am also so excited for the teddy bear picnic.
- Ceira H
Taking care of buddies is hard, but fun because we have to run around with them which is good for exercise. I am looking forward to the teddy bear picnic as I didn't get to do it in prep.
- Tanis O
My buddy has settled in perfectly. The teddy-Bear picnic isn't that long away and I'm so excited. At first my buddy was shy and scared, but after a week or two she was already playing with her friends. Now she is fully settled in and having so much fun with her friends. It was fun... and I'm so proud.
