10ICT UPDATE

In 10 Information and Communication Technology, we have completed our term of studying spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel. Students delved into the intricacies of Formulas, Formatting, Drawing Tools, Charting (Pie, Column, Line and Sparkline), Making Decisions using IF formulas with Logical Operators (AND and OR), Conditional Formatting and What-If Analysis using Goal Seek. All designed to make the computer do the hard work while preparing attractive and informative tables and charts.

Students have also been introduced to interpreting Excel charts from their term 1 endeavours to try to identify strategies that they could implement in class to try to improve their understanding and assessment results.

We have now commenced our study of databases using an online and free-to-use software called Airtable. Students have set up their workspace ready to start creating their first database and have begun gathering data on Hollywood Actors of their choice. Unlike spreadsheets, databases really need to be planned in advance of entering data, so the students have been introduced to the basic structure of databases and the data types that will be used.

As well as creating their own database on Hollywood Actors, students will also create databases for their ICT class and current exam timetables as well as using and manipulating some pre-prepared databases on Seasonal Produce in Australia, and Famous People’s Favourite Books.

Alongside this area of study, students have chosen an individual issue with the use of technology which they have started researching and they will present their findings to the class just before the exams in term 2, thus exposing each student to a wide range of issues of which they should be aware.
