YEAR 7 FOOD TECHNOLOGY
Year 7 students began the amazing food journey learning the mechanics of the McKinnon Secondary Food Technology Kitchens. The year commences with the students learning about safety and hygiene, reading and interpreting recipes, measuring and kitchen equipment.
Term 1 was a huge success, by navigating their way around the globe in cuisines; Cannelloni from Italy, ANZAC biscuits from Australia and New Zealand and Laksa from Southeast Asia. It was great to watch each student become more confident in the kitchen and learn their way around all the kitchen equipment. Throughout theory lessons, students had the opportunity to learn and understand different aspects of nutrition and what entails a healthy, well-balanced diet. They explored the Australian guide to healthy eating and included it in their first Learning Task.
While learning to cook is important, it is also an essential life skill to learn how to properly clean up your area and ensure that all materials are put away properly. This is enforced by bench checks after each cooking session and students being taught an efficient way to clean in a restricted period of time.
Term 2 has now begun. It is important for students to make sure that they bring a container to each of their food technology classes and are encouraged to show off their cooking skills at home, including cleaning up.
